aikido - THE basic postulates (principles)
(according to the teachings of O'Sensei - Morihei Ueshiba)

I - The principle of seeking the truth

“Aikido is a Path of Truth. To practice Aikido is to practice Truth, since the very art was born as kamu-waza – an act of Divinity.”

Aikido – the path of love, pg. 62

“When you bow deeply to the Universe
It bows back to You,
When You call the name of God,
It resonates in You.”

The heart of Aikido, pg. 54

II - The principle of the Universe

“…If you understand aikido, you will understand the purpose of the Universe – you will know yourself…”

Aikido – the path of love, pg. 13

“Change your observations regarding how the Universe actually appears and functions and turn your martial techniques into the vehicles of Purity, Goodness and Beauty.”

The heart of Aikido, pg. 14

III - The principle of love

“Aikido is Love (‘ai').”

The path of love, pg. 74

“Warrior accepts the gift of life
And promotes life in every place
Love is life, it is the essence
Of the Divine Plan.”

The heart of aikido, pg. 11

IV - The principle of harmony

“The most important thing is to harmonise one's spirit with the movement of the Universe,

The second most important thing is to harmonise one's body with the movement of the Universe,

The third most important thing is to harmonise and energetically merge the spirit and body with the movement of the Universe.”

The path of love, pg. 61.

“Aikido is not to defeat another in an argument or a fight, but rather in one's own mission, which we have received from Universal mission, by overcoming one's own self and the very desire of victory.”

The path of love, pg. 13

V - The principle of unified energy

“The source of Unified energy is the energy of true compassion and love.”

The path of love, pg. 26

“Unified energy – the root of Strength of love;
Love, which must continue to grow.
Unified energy can neither be written
With the brush nor expressed with words,
Rather, it must be felt through realization.
Unified energy – a path not at all easy to analyse;
And yet all one needs is to follow
The natural movement of Heavens.”

The path of love, pg. 89

VI - The principle of channeling energy

“When you identify with vibration of the Universe, a mutual exchange takes place. This transformation is the basis of the art – the awe-inspiring effect of energy. That is when vibration of the Universe adapts to your body which in turn gives birth to light, enthusiasm and strength.”

The path of love, pg. 59

“There is great strength in one's thought and it must be practiced and harnessed, but only if coupled with the feeling.”

The path of love, pg. 57

VII - The principle of formlessness

“The essence of budo is without form, because this is where spirit can exist freely and energy move correctly.”

The path of love, pg. 45

The triangle represents generation of energy and is the most stable physical posture. The circle symbolises serenity and perfection, the source of unlimited techniques. The square stands for stability, the basis of applied control.

On a deeper level, these three shapes represent the basic principles of change assuming those processes where one passes from one shape into another.”

The heart of aikido, pg. 70

VIII - The principle of non-resistance

“In aikido there is a partner, but there is no enemy.”

The path of love, pg. 54

“The Art of Peace is invincible because it contends with nothing.”

The Art of Peace, pg. 62

“To injure an opponent is to injure yourself.”

The Art of Peace, pg. 64

“Practice of Aikido is an act of faith, a conviction in the power of non-resistance.”

The heart of aikido, pg. 57

IX - The principle of self-realisation

“Aikido is an art of deep study
And a skill of getting to know yourself.”

The heart of aikido, pg. 58

“The secret of the Way of the Warrior is to stand in the middle of the Great Void.”

The heart of aikido, pg. 76

Ultimately, you must forget about the technique. The further you progress, the fewer teachings there are. The Great path is really No Path.”

The Art of Peace, pg. 114
